JOB DESCRIPTION
Transport Truck Drivers drive straight trucks or tractor-trailers to
transport freight, Long-haul drivers operate heavy trucks over
provincial and international routes, while short-haul drivers operate
local and short interurban routes. They play an important role in the
renewable energy sector by ensuring the safe and timely delivery of
essential materials, equipment and components for projects.
Range: $17.00 – $38.46/hour

Drivers operate from modern, wellequipped trucks designed for comfort

GENERAL JOB TASKS
Operate and drive tractor-trailer, long-combination vehicle
and straight-body trucks weighing over 4500 kg to transport
goods and materials over long distances.
Plan trip logistics and obtain required documentation to
transport goods.
Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspection of vehicle systems,
equipment and accessories such as tires, lights, turning
signals, brakes and storage.
Ensure cargo is secured properly in accordance with safety
requirements and follow safety procedures for transporting
dangerous goods.
Complete necessary paperwork and documents such as
special permits, cargo information, hours of services, distance
travelled, fuel consumption, bills of landing and log books.
Communicate with dispatcher, other drivers and customers
using communication devices and onboard computers.
TRAINING
To become a Transport Truck Driver, completion of secondary school is usually required, such as the
completion of an accredited driver training course up to three months duration, through a vocational school or
community college. On-the-job training is also provided. In addition, a Class 01 or D license is required to
drive straight-body trucks.

CAREER PROGRESSION
With experience and additional training,
Transport Truck Drivers can gain
specialized experience and certifications in
hazardous materials (HAZMAT), oversized
loads, refrigerated freight, or tanker trucks.
They can also progress to a Fleet Manager
or Dispatcher role or operate their own
trucks independently or contract with
companies.
